Where was the Aztec empire, and where is it now?

Aztec Empire was a progenitor of the great Mayan Civilization. By the time the Spanish have come to the New World the Aztec world was experiencing a decline, with a lot of intrastate warfare, therefore people like Cortez had an easy time siding with some of the fighting sides and pitting them against each other, a strategy of choice of many colonizers. Aztec Empire was destroyed as a result of the conquesta. Whats left are many artifacts in a form of buildings etc. The event was vividly presented in the Mel Gibson's movie, "Apocalypto"
