Do the majority of Americans are protestants or evangelicals?

why is that? because the british conquest the territories of now the U.S and they were protestants or evangelicals.. what is supposed to be the evangelical or protestant denomination with power in the government of USA? like in Germany the lutheranism seems to be the majority and powerful denomination in that nation along the catholics
